Description

Function and technical context

The Radice full shaft anode acts as cathodic protection of the 100mm tail shaft, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion on the shaft metal and adjacent metal components of the propulsion line. It works within the underwater transmission system, where permanent exposure to salt or brackish water generates galvanic currents that progressively attack the stainless steel or bronze of the shaft. Without effective anodic protection, the shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and, in extreme cases, structural breakage with the operational and safety consequences that this implies. The design in two halves with tightening screws facilitates its installation on the axle without having to disassemble the propulsion line.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode has exhausted its protective capacity is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point it no longer offers sufficient protection and possible pitting on the shaft must be detected. It is recommended to inspect the anode at each beaching or at least once a season, and replace it before its wear exceeds half of the initial volume, regardless of the time spent in areas of high conductivity or with strong galvanic activity. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical practice to avoid irreparable damage to the propeller shaft and hub that would entail a much higher cost repair or replacement.
