Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be mounted directly on the boat's propulsion shaft, acting as a sacrificial metal against galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals coexist in water. Aluminum is the material chosen for salt and brackish waters due to its greater electrochemical efficiency in these environments, protecting the axle, horn, propeller and other submerged metal components of the drive train. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic attack progressively deteriorates the most valuable parts of the propulsion system, generating looseness, vibrations and costly replacements. This 50 mm diameter anode, reference CMX-50A, is installed hugging the shaft using two screwed halves, without the need to dismantle the shaft line.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the shaft anode has reached the end of its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half its volume, it must be replaced before it no longer offers effective protection. Inspection and replacement is recommended at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching, although in areas of high salinity or with vessels with significant metal masses in contact it may be necessary to inspect mid-season. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to the propulsion shaft or propeller.
