Description

Function and technical context

The shaft anode is a cathodic protection element designed to be installed directly on the boat's propulsion shaft, acting as a sacrificial metal against galvanic corrosion. It works within the underwater transmission system, protecting the shaft, horn and propeller hub from electrochemical attack caused by the potential difference between dissimilar metals in contact with sea or brackish water. Without proper cathodic protection, the stainless steel or bronze shaft suffers accelerated corrosion that can compromise its structural integrity, cause looseness in the horn, abnormal vibrations, or even fracture of the shaft in service. This shaft anode for 3/4'' diameter (reference CMX-1) is specifically sized for shafts of that nominal size, guaranteeing a secure fit and effective electrical contact.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes must be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that volume their sacrificial capacity is compromised and the shaft is left unprotected. Signs that the anode is exhausted include a visible reduction of the anode body, uniform whitish or grayish discoloration without relief, and in advanced cases, the appearance of pits or reddish spots on the axis itself. The professional recommendation is to replace the CMX-1 anode at each annual beaching as a preventive measure; The minimal cost of this part avoids shaft repairs or horn replacement, considerably more expensive interventions that can leave the boat out of service.
