ANODE SHAFT 25mm
Description
Function and technical context
Shaft anodes are essential elements of a boat's cathodic protection system: they are installed directly on the tailshaft to act as sacrificial metal and protect the submerged metal components – shaft, propeller, horn and rudder – from galvanic corrosion. This electrochemical corrosion process occurs when different metals coexist in a conductive medium such as salt or brackish water, and without adequate protection it can severely degrade the drive shaft in a single season. The shaft anode with a diameter of 25 mm (reference CMXC-25) is designed to be precisely coupled to shafts of that nominal size, guaranteeing optimal electrical contact and a sufficient sacrificial surface to protect the submerged drive train assembly.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is a reduction in mass by more than 50%, at which point it loses protective effectiveness and exposes the shaft and propeller to corrosion. It is also common to find pitting marks or whitish discoloration on the shaft itself near the mounting point, indicating that the anode is no longer functioning correctly. It is recommended to check the condition of the shaft anodes at each seasonal stranding and replace them preventively at the beginning of each navigation season; Delaying replacement can lead to a corroded shaft or damaged propeller, which is considerably more expensive to repair than the anode itself.
