Description

Function and technical context

This shaft anode acts as a cathodic sacrifice to protect the boat's propulsion shaft from galvanic corrosion caused by prolonged immersion in salt or brackish water. It is installed directly on the propeller shaft, interposing a sacrificial metal—in this case a high-purity zinc alloy—between the stainless steel or bronze of the shaft and the aggressive ions of the marine environment. Without this protection, electrochemical corrosion progressively attacks the shaft, causing pitting, loss of section and, in advanced cases, breakage during navigation with the serious consequences that this implies for the safety of the vessel and the cost of repair. The anode ref. CMXC-06 is designed for a 1-3/8 inch diameter shaft, ensuring a secure fit and optimal electrical contact to maximize the effectiveness of cathodic protection.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each boating season; The general rule among naval mechanics is to replace them when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass, since below that threshold their sacrificial capacity becomes insufficient to protect the shaft. The symptoms that the anode has exhausted its useful life are visible to the naked eye: the zinc block appears very reduced, with an irregular surface or completely consumed, and in extreme cases the first marks of oxidation or pitting are detected on the axis itself. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual stranding is the most economical measure to avoid having to replace or rectify the propulsion shaft, a significantly more expensive repair that can immobilize the boat in the middle of the season.
