Function and technical context

The shaft anode is the sacrificial element responsible for protecting the propulsion shaft through cathodic protection, preventing galvanic corrosion from deteriorating the metal of the shaft in contact with salt or brackish water. It works in the underwater transmission system of the boat, acting as a sacrificial electrode that oxidizes preferably before the noble metal parts of the propulsion assembly. Without adequate cathodic protection, the shaft is exposed to accelerated electrochemical corrosion, which can cause loss of section, vibrations, misalignment and, in advanced cases, shaft breakage with the consequences that this implies for navigation safety. The CMXC-09 reference is sized for 2-inch shafts, adapting to the standard diameter of propulsion shafts for motor and sailing boats for recreational and professional use.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes must be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, regardless of the time elapsed, since from that point on their protection capacity decreases significantly. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode manifest as superficial pitting on the shaft, greenish or whitish corrosion deposits around the mounting area, and in severe cases, visible galvanic erosion marks on the metal of the shaft itself. It is recommended to replace the CMXC-09 anode preventively at each annual grounding: it is a minimal investment that avoids the high cost of rectifying or replacing a propulsion shaft damaged by electrochemical corrosion.
