Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is the component responsible for protecting the metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, one of the most aggressive degradation processes in marine environments. Made of zinc or equivalent alloy, it acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair, gradually sacrificing itself to preserve the aluminum of the casing, the propeller shaft and other metallic elements of the powertrain. In Selva engines of the 6, 8, 9.9 and 15 hp series, this anode covers the areas most exposed to the action of salt, brackish and contaminated water, guaranteeing the structural integrity of the engine throughout the navigation season. Without effective cathodic protection, corrosion advances silently and can compromise high-cost replacement parts such as the engine block or lower transmission.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode needs to be replaced is the visible loss of mass: when it has consumed approximately 50% of its initial volume, its protective capacity decreases significantly and it must be replaced before it is completely exhausted. Checking and changing anodes is a seasonal maintenance task; It is recommended to inspect them at the beginning and end of each season, and replace them at least once a year in salt water or in environments with high electrical conductivity.
