Function and technical context

The 140mm diameter aluminum rudder anode acts as a sacrificial element in the boat's cathodic protection system, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal surfaces of the rudder and blade. Being made of aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for vessels that operate in salty and brackish waters, where the difference in electrochemical potential between different metals is more aggressive. Its correct installation on the rudder shaft or stock ensures that it is the one that corrodes instead of the structural parts, avoiding costly replacements of rudders, shafts and hardware. A consumed or missing anode leaves the stainless steel, bronze and aluminum components in the steering area exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the maneuverability of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The rudder anodes should be inspected at least once a season, preferably at the annual beaching, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold their protection capacity decreases significantly. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode include pitting, surface erosion, or yellowish-brown discoloration on the rudder blade, stock, or adjacent stainless steel hardware. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to prolong the useful life of the steering system and avoid serious navigation breakdowns.
