RUDDER ANODE 90 mm.
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes for rudders act as active cathodic protection against galvanic corrosion that affects the submerged metal surfaces of the vessel. This 90 mm anode (ref. CMF90) is installed directly on the rudder, becoming the element that preferentially oxidizes, thus preserving the structural integrity of the blade and rudder pin. Galvanic corrosion is one of the main silent enemies of the hull and submerged appendages, especially in ports with high density of vessels or in salt water, where electrolytic currents are more aggressive. Without adequate anodic protection, the rudder material progressively degrades, compromising maneuverability and navigational safety.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the rudder anode needs to be replaced is a reduction in mass of around 50%, at which point its protective capacity decreases significantly and adjacent metals begin to be compromised. It is recommended to check and replace the rudder anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual maintenance docking, or more frequently if the boat remains moored in marinas with high underwater electrical activity. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid repairing or replacing the rudder, a much higher cost component.
