ANODE DISC DIAMETER 120 MM
Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anodes in disc format act as cathodic protection of the submerged metal components of the boat, consuming themselves to prevent galvanic corrosion in more critical parts such as propellers, shafts, keels or metal hulls. This 120 mm diameter disc anode, reference CMR-4, is installed directly on flat surfaces of the hull or transmission, providing a large contact area that maximizes electrochemical protection in the mounting area. Its function is especially relevant in marine environments where the potential difference between different metals in contact with salt or brackish water generates electrical currents that progressively destroy the aluminum, bronze or stainless steel alloys of the propulsion assembly. Without adequate and active anodic protection, the deterioration of structural parts and the transmission can become irreversible in a few sailing seasons.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode has completed its cycle is a mass loss of more than 50% compared to its initial size: when the disc appears noticeably reduced, with irregular edges or deep craters, it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. The inspection of the anodes should be carried out at least once a season, ideally during the winter stranding, although in waters with high conductivity or in boats with electrical installations on board it is also advisable to inspect them mid-season. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to high-cost parts such as propeller shafts, horns or transmission bodies.
