Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial disc anodes are cathodic protection elements that are installed on hulls, tail shafts, rudders and submerged metal surfaces of the vessel to prevent galvanic corrosion. Made from a high-purity zinc alloy, this 165 mm disc acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair, attracting electrochemical corrosion that would otherwise destroy propellers, shafts, flanges and other structural components of the propulsion line. Its installation is critical in salt and brackish water environments, where the potential difference between different metals drastically accelerates the oxidation and deterioration process.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the reduction of its mass to 50% or more with respect to the initial size, at which point it stops effectively protecting the adjacent metal surfaces; It also indicates urgent replacement if visible corrosion appears on the shaft or on the hull flange before reaching this loss. It is recommended to inspect and replace the sacrificial anodes at least once a season or every time the boat goes into dry dock, since a depleted anode can lead to the loss of the shaft, the propeller or even compromise the integrity of the hull, generating repairs at a much higher cost than the anode itself.
