Transmits power to the propeller hub on Suzuki outboard engines DT9.9, DT15, DF9.9 and DF15 (1978–2019). The propeller shaft works inside the lower case, subjected to torsional stress and the marine environment; Its deterioration causes vibrations in the propulsion and oil leaks in the lower box.

Description

Function and technical context

The propeller shaft is the transmission component that transfers the power generated by the outboard motor to the propulsion propeller, being the fundamental mechanical link between the conical group of the gearbox and the propeller hub. It works within the lower transmission system of the outboard, continuously subjected to torsion, bending efforts and the aggressiveness of the marine environment. An axle in poor condition causes abnormal vibrations in the propulsion, loss of thrust efficiency, accelerated deterioration of the water seals and, in serious cases, the entry of salt water into the interior of the lower case with consequent damage to gears and bearings. The reference 57610-93901 has been updated by Suzuki with the number 57610-90L00, guaranteeing full interoperability with the models of the DT and DF range of small outboards.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or damaged propeller shaft are: noticeable vibration in the shaft or hull at low and medium revolutions, excessive axial or radial play when moving the propeller by hand with the engine off, and oil leaks in the lower case due to deteriorated seals due to the eccentricity of the shaft. It is also common to detect galvanic corrosion marks, worn grooves on the coupling or deformations due to impact with submerged objects. It is recommended to inspect the shaft at each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively if there is any sign of deformation or wear in the coupling grooves, since operating with a shaft in poor condition can result in the complete unusability of the lower case away from the port.
