Description

Function and technical context

Shaft coating anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to surround the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as a sacrificial metal against galvanic corrosion in marine environments. They work directly on the propulsion system, protecting the stainless steel or bronze shaft from the electrochemical action of salt, brackish or fresh water. The 50 mm Radice model is specifically sized for shafts of that diameter, guaranteeing optimal fit and electrical contact with the metal surface to be protected. Without adequate cathodic protection on the shaft, corrosion progresses silently and can compromise the structural integrity of the shaft, horns, seals and blade supports, leading to serious breakdowns that are difficult to repair when grounded.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, usually during the annual beaching, and replaced when they have lost between 50% and 60% of their mass, since below that threshold they no longer offer effective protection. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode include visible pitting on the shaft, corrosion on the horn, unusual shaft vibration, or greenish or reddish discoloration on adjacent metal areas. Replacing the shaft anode preventively at each grounding is one of the lowest-cost interventions that exists in nautical maintenance, and avoids shaft repairs or replacement of horns at a much higher cost.
