Description

Function and technical context

The Radice 45mm shaft coating anode acts as sacrificial galvanic protection directly on the propeller shaft, interposing a metal of lower electrochemical potential between the stainless steel or bronze of the shaft and seawater or brackish water. Its mission is to be consumed in a controlled manner to prevent electrolytic corrosion from attacking the drive shaft, stern tube bearings, propellers and other submerged metallic elements of the transmission line. Being specifically designed for 45 mm diameter shafts with the clamp geometry typical of the Radice range, it guarantees continuous electrical contact and a homogeneous distribution of cathodic protection around the shaft. Without effective galvanic protection in the drive line, corrosion silently progresses and can compromise the structural integrity of the shaft, cause bearing play, and lead to costly grounding repairs.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the shaft anode has reached the end of its useful life is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed more than 50% of its initial volume, it has stopped protecting effectively and must be replaced immediately. In boats that navigate in waters with high conductivity or that remain moored with shore power, wear can occur before the end of the season. The recommended practice for marine maintenance technicians is to inspect the shaft anodes at each beaching or, at a minimum, at the beginning and middle of the boating season; Replacing them preventatively before they are completely depleted is the most economical way to avoid shaft and horn degradation.
