Description

Function and technical context

Aluminum propeller shaft anodes act as sacrificial cathodic protection, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the submerged metal components of the transmission. This anode is designed specifically for 30 and 35 mm propeller shafts, being placed directly on the shaft to create an electrochemical barrier that preserves the base metal of the propeller assembly. The aluminum alloy makes it especially suitable for navigation in salt and brackish waters, environments where galvanic corrosion is considerably accelerated. Without healthy cathodic protection, the shaft, horn, and bronze or stainless steel fittings are exposed to progressive degradation that can compromise the structural integrity of the driveline.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the anode has completed its life cycle is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, without waiting for the end of the season. The recommended inspection is annual, coinciding with dry laying or maintenance beaching, although in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water or with dispersed currents a semiannual inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively each season is the most economical measure to avoid damage to the propeller shaft, horn or buttress, repairs that can be considerably more expensive.
