Description

Function and technical context

The Max Prop propeller shaft anode acts as sacrificial galvanic protection in the submerged propulsion system, neutralizing electrolytic corrosion that affects the propeller shaft and adjacent metal components. It works within the underwater transmission system, being located directly above the propeller shaft in diameters of 22, 25 and 28 mm, forming a sacrificial barrier that preferably oxidizes before the most valuable parts do so. Without effective cathodic protection, the shaft and components of the Max Prop propeller are exposed to the accelerated corrosion typical of marine environments, which can compromise the structural integrity of the transmission and lead to vibrations, play and serious mechanical failures in navigation.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode has exhausted its sacrificial capacity is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, as its protective effectiveness decreases dramatically before disappearing completely. Inspection and replacement is recommended at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the annual beaching for hull inspection; In areas with high electrical conductivity of water or with greater galvanic activity (ports with a lot of traffic, brackish water), an intermediate revision may be necessary. Replacing the shaft anode preventively each season is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid irreparable damage to the drive shaft and Max Prop propeller, the repair or replacement of which involves a much higher cost.
