Description

Function and technical context

The Variprop 59 propeller anode is a cathodic protection element designed specifically for Variprop series variable pitch propellers, whose geometry and fixing system make it irreplaceable with generic anodes. Its mission is to act as a sacrificial metal, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal components of the propeller, hub and variable pitch mechanisms exposed to salt or brackish water. Being the most electrochemically active element of the set, it degrades in a controlled manner, protecting the parts of greatest value and mechanical precision. In variable pitch propellers such as the Variprop, where the dimensional tolerance of the blades and adjustment mechanism is critical, any corrosion pitting can compromise propulsive performance and lead to structural failure of the propeller.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the Variprop 59 anode needs replacement is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume it should be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely, since a depleted anode leaves the propeller unprotected against galvanic corrosion. It is recommended to inspect and replace the anode at least once a season, coinciding with the annual docking of the boat, or more frequently in waters with high conductivity or if the boat is moored for long periods. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid damage to the Variprop propeller, the repair or replacement of which involves a much higher cost.
