FLEXOFOLD ANODE

Function and technical context

The Flexofold sacrificial anode is part of the cathodic protection system of the propeller and its folding mechanism, acting as a galvanic element that absorbs electrolytic corrosion instead of the metal components of the propeller. Flexofold folding propellers are made from high-performance alloys that are especially vulnerable to galvanic corrosion when the boat remains in the water for weeks or months, making the anode a critical component of the assembly. Without adequate cathodic protection, the galvanic attack progressively deteriorates the hub, blades and internal mechanisms of the folding propeller, generating clearances, loss of propulsive efficiency and, in advanced cases, irreparable structural damage to the propeller.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when they have lost between 30 and 50% of their mass, regardless of the time elapsed; If the anode appears completely smooth, whitish and reduced in volume, the protection is already insufficient. In vessels that remain in port throughout the year or in areas with high water conductivity (ports with eddy currents or brackish waters), the useful life may be reduced to a single season, so it is recommended to check the condition of the anode also mid-season. Replacing the Flexofold anode preventively is the most economical measure to guarantee the integrity of a propeller whose replacement or repair cost is much higher than that of the anode itself.
