Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be mounted directly on the vessel's propulsion shaft, acting as a galvanic sacrifice to preserve the most valuable submerged metal parts. This 45mm inner diameter zinc anode, reference CMPNRAD45C, is manufactured specifically for Radice shafts, ensuring a precise fit and optimal electrical contact with the shaft. Its function is to attract electrolytic corrosion which, if this component did not exist, would progressively degrade the tail shaft, propeller, rudder and other submerged metal elements. The absence or depletion of this anode causes accelerated corrosion of the shaft, with consequences such as pitting, loss of resistant section and, in serious cases, breakage of the shaft while sailing.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the shaft anode must be replaced is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point its protective capacity is compromised; They must also be replaced if they present cracks, loss of contact with the shaft or if signs of incipient corrosion are observed on the propulsion shaft itself. As a general rule, shaft anodes should be inspected at each beaching and replaced at least once per season, especially in areas with highly conductive salt or brackish water. Preventatively renewing the anode at the beginning of each season is the most recommended practice to avoid costly damage to the shaft or propeller that forces an unplanned grounding.
