AUTO-PROP H6 ZINC PROPELLER ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The zinc anodes for Auto-prop H6 propellers are part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice to protect submerged metal parts against galvanic corrosion. The Auto-prop H6 variable pitch propeller incorporates internal bronze and aluminum mechanisms that, in contact with salt or brackish water, are exposed to accelerated oxidation processes; The zinc anode is preferably consumed, preserving the metallic integrity of the propellant assembly. Without active and properly sized cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can degrade internal propeller components, compromise blade fit, and significantly reduce propulsion system life.
When to replace this anode?
The clearest symptom that the H6 zinc anode needs replacement is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has reduced its volume by around 50% or has a very irregular and porous surface, it has exhausted its protective capacity. It is recommended to inspect and replace the anode at least once per boating season, or more frequently if the boat remains in areas with high water conductivity or anchorages with intense galvanic currents. Replacing the anode preventively, without waiting for its complete exhaustion, is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to the Auto-prop propeller and its internal components.
