Description

Function and Technical Context

The sacrificial anode for OMC engines acts as a galvanic protector of the submerged metallic components of the propulsion unit, attracting toward itself the electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise degrade the engine aluminum or transmission. It works within the cathodic protection system of the engine-outboard assembly, being especially critical in saltwater or brackish water environments where galvanic activity is more aggressive. Its absence or excessive wear leaves the block, shaft, and propeller exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the engine and generate costly failures. This anode, identified with the reference CM976669A and compatible with the OMC reference 976669, is manufactured to provide reliable protection performance under the ordinary operating conditions of vessels equipped with Johnson and Evinrude engines.

When to Replace This Part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, as beyond that point their protective capacity decreases significantly. Symptoms of an exhausted anode include the appearance of pitting or corrosion stains on the engine's aluminum surfaces, discoloration in submerged metal areas, or a completely smooth and worn appearance of the anode itself. Replacing it preventively at the start of each season is the most economical and effective practice to avoid severe damage to high-cost components such as the transmission shaft, skeg, or engine housing.
