Function and Technical Context

This sacrificial anode is designed to protect the metal components of the OMC King Cobra outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of marine engines in saltwater and brackish water environments. Made of zinc, it acts as a sacrificial electrode: it corrodes in a controlled manner to preserve critical parts of the engine unit, such as the gearbox, shaft, and propeller. Its proper installation ensures that electrochemical degradation falls upon the anode and not on the aluminum or steel alloys of the motor. Without adequate cathodic protection, structural deterioration can affect hard-to-reach areas and costly repairs.

When to Replace This Part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, show cracks, or have partially detached from their mounting. In vessels that regularly navigate in saltwater or high-conductivity waters, wear can be faster and require a mid-season inspection. Replacing the anode preventively is one of the most economical and effective maintenance measures to prevent severe corrosion damage to the engine unit.
