Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BPR7HS-10 spark plug acts in the engine ignition system, generating the electric spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber at the precise moment of the work cycle. Its thermal grade and thread length are designed for the specific requirements of outboard propellers for recreational nautical use, both in 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. An electrode in poor condition or an air gap (gap) out of tolerance causes incomplete combustion that results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and possible damage to the exhaust due to the presence of unburned fuel. The correct selection of the thermal grade, such as the one incorporated in this reference, is essential to avoid pre-ignition or fouling of the electrode in the working conditions typical of recreational boating.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of a degraded spark plug in an outboard engine are difficult starting when cold, rough idling, jerks or power cuts while fully loaded, and higher than usual petrol consumption. It is recommended to check the condition of the electrode and verify the gap every 100 hours of operation, proceeding with preventive replacement every 200 hours or at the beginning of each nautical season. Changing spark plugs preventively is one of the lowest-cost interventions in outboard maintenance and eliminates the risk of losing propulsion due to an avoidable misfire.
