Function and technical context

The NGK BPR6HS-10 spark plug is the element responsible for generating the electric spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber of the petrol outboard or marine engine. It is part of the ignition system and works in sync with the coil and the CDI module to ensure efficient combustion in each engine cycle. A bad spark plug causes misfires, incomplete combustion and progressive loss of power, as well as high fuel consumption. The NGK reference BPR6HS-10 incorporates an integrated anti-interference resistor (indicated by the "R" in its code) that protects the onboard electronics against electromagnetic interference, a common requirement in modern nautical installations. The ground electrode is configured with a spacing of 1.0 mm, as indicated by the “-10” suffix in its designation, which distinguishes it from the standard BPR6HS version.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the spark plug needs to be replaced are difficult starting when cold, irregular vibrations of the engine at idle (rattling or "misfire"), loss of acceleration under full load and a noticeable increase in fuel consumption. In marine engines for recreational use, it is recommended to replace the spark plugs every 100 hours of navigation or at the beginning of each season, whichever comes first, also checking the condition of the electrode and carbon deposits during each periodic maintenance. Changing the spark plugs preventively, instead of waiting for a failure in navigation, avoids strandings and more costly breakdowns in the ignition system.
