NGK BPR6ES-11 SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The NGK BPR6ES-11 spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber of the petrol outboard or inboard engine. It works within the ignition system, being the last link in the chain that goes from the ignition coil to the cylinder, where electrical energy is converted into thermal energy to start the power cycle. A bad spark plug causes incomplete or irregular ignition, which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption, difficulty starting the engine and high emissions. The reference BPR6ES-11 indicates a thermal grade 6 with built-in resistance (R), flat gasket (B) and standard electrode, with an electrode gap of 1.1 mm preset at the factory, making it a spark plug particularly suitable for four-stroke marine engines operating in demanding conditions of humidity and salinity.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn or faulty spark plug in a marine engine include difficult cold starts, jerking or jerking at low rpm, irregular engine vibration at idle, and a visible increase in fuel consumption. In marine applications, it is recommended to replace the spark plugs every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each nautical season, since humidity, salt and temperature cycles accelerate the deterioration of the electrode and the insulator. Changing spark plugs preventively before they cause a failure while sailing is a standard practice in nautical maintenance that prevents costly breakdowns far from port.
