Description

Function and technical context

Located at the rear end of the crankshaft, this transmission coupling forms the mechanical link between the engine block and the propeller shaft, channeling the torque generated in each combustion cycle to the propeller. It works within the marine power transmission system, where it must support both the continuous rotating loads and the intermittent torsional impulses typical of high-performance V6 and V8 engines. Thanks to its design, it cushions angular misalignments that arise from the structural bending of the engine-shaft assembly, reducing fatigue on the rear crankshaft seal and preserving its tightness. In the most recent models it is manufactured as a single piece, while in previous versions it is made up of two elements; This difference in configuration is decisive when selecting the correct spare part. A deteriorated coupling transmits torsional vibrations without attenuation, which accelerates the wear of the rear seal, increases the risk of water entering the crankcase and compromises the integrity of the drive shaft.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of a coupling in poor condition are the abnormal vibrations that are perceived in the hull or in the controls during navigation, sometimes accompanied by dull metallic noises coming from the rear area of the block. If the rear crankshaft seal shows signs of oil leakage or internal moisture, it is essential to inspect the coupling before replacing the seal, as excessive vibration will have been the root cause of the failure. Although there is no fixed interval of hours for this part, it is recommended that it be reviewed during each seasonal maintenance and its preventive replacement whenever intervention is carried out in the crankshaft area or major engine revisions are undertaken, thus avoiding a propulsion breakdown at sea.
