Function and Technical Context

The fuel pump diaphragm is the sealing and pumping element that allows fuel to flow from the tank to the carburetor in four-stroke outboard engines. It operates within the fuel delivery system, acting as a flexible membrane that generates the pressure pulses necessary to maintain a continuous supply of fuel to the engine. When this diaphragm hardens, cracks, or ruptures, the pump loses its priming ability, causing starting failures, engine stalling under full load, or sudden shutdowns while underway. Kit 15170-99E00 includes the replacement components necessary to restore fuel pump performance in Suzuki DF engines of the DF9 series.9, DF15, DF25, DF30, DF40, DF50, DF60, and DF70 series, as well as in compatible Johnson and Evinrude engines, and is also listed under OMC part numbers 5030699 and 5032321.

When should this part be replaced?

The most common symptoms of a deteriorated fuel pump diaphragm are difficulty starting in cold weather, intermittent idle at medium and high loads, and irregular enrichment or lean-out of the mixture due to lack of fuel pressure. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the diaphragm during every seasonal maintenance or every 200–300 hours of operation, as the rubber also ages due to exposure to the components of modern ethanol-blended fuel, even without intensive use. Replacing the diaphragm kit as a preventive measure during annual maintenance prevents breakdowns caused by fuel starvation at sea, where an engine shutdown can be particularly critical.
