Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for Max Prop 38 mm propeller acts as active cathodic protection against galvanic corrosion in the variable pitch propeller area. Being made of high-purity zinc, the anode degrades in a controlled manner instead of the higher-value metal components of the propeller, such as the bronze or stainless steel hub, shaft or blades. This protection system is especially critical in boats that remain in the water for long periods or that navigate in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water. Without adequate anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly attack the components of the Max Prop propeller, compromising the operation of the propulsion system and generating high-cost breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 30% and 50% of its visible mass, showing an irregular, eroded surface or loss of geometric shape. It is recommended to inspect it at each beaching or at least once per navigation season, replacing it preventively even if it is not completely consumed. Changing the anode at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the internal components of the Max Prop propeller, whose repair or replacement involves a much higher expense.
