Description

Function and technical context

The propeller nut is the fastening element that retains the propeller assembly to the drive shaft, ensuring that the thrust generated by the blades is transferred safely and without play to the drive shaft. It works in the transmission system of the boat, continuously subjected to vibrations, torsional loads and the corrosive action of seawater. A damaged or incorrectly tightened propeller nut can cause the propeller to disengage while underway, resulting in loss of boat control and serious damage to the shaft, stern seal and bearings. The reference TEN01045 is designed to ensure precise adjustment in the applications for which it has been designed, maintaining the mechanical integrity of the drive assembly in demanding working conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the propeller nut needs to be checked or replaced are: abnormal vibration perceptible in the shaft or hull at different engine speeds, detectable play when trying to move the propeller manually with the engine off, or visible signs of galvanic corrosion, deformation of the threads or loss of material on the support surface. It is recommended to inspect the propeller nut during each seasonal maintenance and always after any impact of the propeller with a submerged object, as these impacts can compromise the tightening and geometry of the thread. Replacing it preventively when the first signs of wear appear prevents major breakdowns in the propulsion assembly, which are considerably more expensive to repair at the dock.
