LARGE KAMEWA ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to protect the submerged metal parts of propellers, shafts and nozzles against galvanic corrosion, one of the most aggressive degradation processes in marine environments. This large Kamewa anode (reference TEN02451) is designed specifically for Kamewa propulsion systems, whose nozzles and structural components are permanently exposed to salt, brackish or fresh water. Being a less noble metal than stainless steel or bronze, the anode sacrifices itself by attracting the galvanic current and thus preserving the integrity of the most valuable pieces. If the anode is completely depleted without being replaced, corrosion directly attacks the propeller, shaft or nozzle, generating costly structural damage and compromising the safety of the boat.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers sufficient protection and corrosion begins to act on adjacent components. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season and, in areas of high salinity or with electrical currents dispersed in the water, even every six months. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is a common practice among professionals in the nautical sector, since the cost of an anode is significantly lower than that of repairing or changing a propeller or propulsion shaft damaged by galvanic corrosion.
