Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are fundamental elements in the cathodic protection of submerged vessels and naval structures. This anode sector acts by absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal components of the hull, shafts, propellers, rudders and other submerged elements made of steel, aluminum or bronze. Being a less noble metal than the components it protects, the anode corrodes in a controlled and sacrificial manner, preserving the structural integrity of the most expensive and critical parts of the boat. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is essential in any serious nautical maintenance program, especially in salt or brackish water areas where electrolytic conductivity accelerates the corrosion process.

When to replace this part?

A sacrificial anode must be replaced when it has lost 50% to 60% of its mass, before its reduced active surface area no longer offers effective protection to submerged metal components. The most common symptoms of an exhausted or insufficient anode are the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on the propeller shaft, erosion on the propeller blades, reddish or whitish stains on the hull and premature deterioration of the stern hardware. As a general rule in nautical maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at each beaching and replace them at least once per season; In waters with high salt concentration or on boats with complex on-board electrical installations, a more frequent replacement cycle may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to structural parts of much higher cost.
