Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key element in the cathodic protection system of any vessel: they act as a sacrificial mass that corrodes preferentially against the nobler metals of the hull, propeller, shafts and submerged accessories, preventing galvanic corrosion from attacking the structural and propulsion parts. This sector anode is made of high-purity zinc, making it the appropriate choice for vessels sailing in salt or brackish water, where the electrochemical potential of the environment is more aggressive. Without properly sized cathodic protection, submerged metal elements—propellers, horns, rudders, engine legs—suffer accelerated degradation that can compromise the structural integrity and maneuverability of the vessel. The reference TEN00306 corresponds to a sector-type anode, a common format in perimeter protection installations for hulls and in protection systems for axles and appendages with a large exposed surface.

When to replace this anode?

The clearest sign that the anode has reached its useful life is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient. The inspection and replacement of the sacrificial anodes should be carried out at least once a season, ideally at the annual beaching, although in very corrosive waters or on vessels with high activity it may be necessary to inspect them every six months. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely used up prevents active corrosion on high-cost parts such as propellers, shafts or metal hulls, repairs that are always much more expensive than a simple new anode.
