Function and technical context

Naval sector anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to safeguard the submerged metal surfaces of the vessel against galvanic corrosion. They act as sacrificial metal, rusting in a controlled manner in place of higher-value structural or mechanical components such as the tailshaft, propeller, rudder or hull. This type of zinc anode is installed directly on the hull or in areas exposed to seawater, where the difference in electrical potential between different metals creates galvanic currents capable of progressively destroying aluminum, bronze or stainless steel alloys. Without effective cathodic protection, the degradation of these components can compromise both the structural integrity of the vessel and the proper functioning of the propulsion and steering systems.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a sector anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since its protection capacity is compromised. As a general rule, the anodes are inspected and replaced at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the annual beaching, although in areas with high water conductivity or vessels with complex electrical systems it may be necessary to check them more frequently. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid serious repairs to propellers, shafts and submerged metal structures, the replacement of which is considerably more expensive.
