Description
Function and technical context
Rectangular sacrificial anodes are essential elements in the cathodic protection system of boats, outboard engines, inboard engines and tail drives. This anode acts as an electrochemically active element that corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the structural metal parts of the hull, shaft or propeller, absorbing the galvanic corrosion generated by the potential difference between the different metals immersed in water. Its rectangular geometry with dimensions 280x90x30 mm makes it especially suitable for installation on flat surfaces of hulls, keels or steel or aluminum structures permanently exposed to the marine environment. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly degrade components such as propeller shafts, rudders, stern cockpits or marine aluminum structures in a single sailing season.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the zinc block has deep cavities, has been noticeably reduced in thickness or has a completely eroded and grainy surface, it has stopped protecting effectively. The inspection of the sacrificial anodes should be carried out at least once a season, coinciding with the annual docking of the vessel, although in waters with high electrical conductivity or port areas with dispersed currents, wear can be significantly faster. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to structural parts whose repair or replacement involves a much higher cost.
