RECTANGULAR ANODE 220x100x30
Description
Function and technical context
Rectangular sacrificial anodes like this one fulfill an essential function in the cathodic protection of boats and outboard or inboard engines: being made of high-purity zinc, they corrode preferentially against the noble metals of the propulsion assembly -propellers, shafts, cavitation and casings-, preventing galvanic corrosion from damaging the structural parts of the engine or hull. This rectangular anode with dimensions 220×100×30 mm is designed to be installed on flat surfaces of the hull, transom or submerged structures, offering a large active surface of electrochemical protection. Without correct anodic protection, submerged metal components degrade quickly, especially in salty or brackish water, potentially causing irreversible damage to the tail shaft, propeller or the engine block itself.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that a zinc anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers sufficient protection and the surrounding metals begin to corrode. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season – ideally at the annual beaching – and replace them preventively if they show noticeable wear, cracks or a completely whitish and calcified surface. Changing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs to shafts, propellers or aluminum housings.
