Description

Function and technical context

The fish-shaped sacrificial anodes with insert are designed to protect the hull, tailshaft, propeller and metal fittings of the boat against galvanic corrosion, one of the most aggressive deterioration processes in marine environments. This type of anode acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair it forms with the ship's noble metals, sacrificing itself in a controlled manner so that critical structures such as the rudder, propeller anodes or shaft supports do not suffer electrochemical degradation. The interior metal insert facilitates secure fixation and efficient electrical contact with the structure to be protected, guaranteeing that the cathodic protection is continuous and homogeneous throughout the entire navigation season. Without correct anodic protection, submerged metal elements can suffer pitting, material loss and, in severe cases, structural failures that compromise the safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that a sacrificial anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is seriously compromised. As a general preventive maintenance rule, hull anodes and appendages should be inspected at least once a season—ideally at each beaching—and renewed before material loss becomes excessive. Replacing the fish anode preventively is a minimal investment compared to the cost of repairing or replacing a propeller, shaft or frame corroded by galvanism.
