Description

Function and technical context

The fish-shaped zinc anode acts as a sacrificial element in the hull's cathodic protection system, diverting towards itself electrochemical corrosion that would otherwise attack the boat's propeller, shaft, submerged metal surfaces and bronze or aluminum fittings. Its hydrodynamic geometry, specifically designed to be mounted on the hull, minimizes drag and guarantees an effective contact surface with seawater. Without correctly sized cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly deteriorate structural and propulsion components, causing costly breakdowns that in many cases are only detected during the end-of-season grounding.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the sacrifice exceeds 50% of the initial volume, the component has lost its protective capacity and must be replaced without delay. Preventive inspection and replacement is recommended at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching of the boat, although in areas with high water conductivity or erratic currents it may be necessary to check its condition mid-season. Replacing the anode before it is completely consumed is the easiest and most economical way to prevent pitting damage to the propeller, tailshaft or rudder.
