OVAL ANODE 2.2Kg.
Description
Function and technical context
Zinc sacrificial anodes are the central component of any vessel's cathodic protection system: they act as an active preferentially corroding metal, protecting the hull, propeller, shafts and other submerged metal surfaces from the destructive action of galvanic corrosion in salt and brackish water. This oval zinc anode is installed directly on the hull or metal hull structures, providing a continuous sacrificial surface that deflects electrochemical attack from seawater towards itself. Without properly sized cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can puncture or severely weaken the metal of the hull, rudder fins, shaft mounts and propulsion nozzles, causing costly structural damage to repair and compromising the safety of the vessel while underway.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that a helmet anode has reached its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume (erosion greater than 50%), it must be replaced immediately to ensure continuity of cathodic protection. It is recommended to inspect the hull anodes at least once a season – ideally at the annual beaching – and replace them preventively if they show advanced erosion, cracks, detachment of the metal insert or uniform whitish discoloration that indicates depletion of active zinc. Replacing the anode at each beaching, even if it conserves some material, is the most economical practice: the cost of the anode is minimal compared to repairing hulls or shafts damaged by uncontrolled galvanic corrosion.
