Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes in ingot format with insert are key elements of the cathodic protection system for boats, outboard engines, inboard engines and marine propulsion equipment. Its mission is to protect submerged metal parts - such as the hull, tail shaft, cavitator or engine casing - against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that progressively degrades metals in contact with salt, brackish or fresh water. Being made of high-purity zinc, this ingot acts as a sacrificial metal: it corrodes in place of the structural components of the assembly, preserving the integrity of higher-cost parts. The insert design facilitates direct mechanical fixation on flat surfaces of the hull or engine structure, ensuring continuous electrical contact and homogeneous protection throughout the sailing season.

When to replace this anode?

The clearest sign that the ingot anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers sufficient protection and the metal components it protects begin to be exposed to galvanic corrosion. Visually, a depleted anode appears completely irregular, friable, or almost nonexistent, while the presence of corrosion on the nearby base metal indicates that the sacrifice is complete. It is recommended that the zinc anodes be inspected and replaced at least once a season or at each stranding, following professional judgment that a low-cost anode is the cheapest insurance against serious damage to the shaft, propeller or hull.
