LINE CUTTING ANODE Mod. F1
Description
Function and technical context
The line-cutting anode Mod. F1 (ref. CMLCF1) is a cathodic protection component specifically designed to be mounted on the transmission shaft or in the stern area of the boat, fulfilling a double function: protecting the submerged metal parts against galvanic corrosion and, in turn, acting as a line-cutting element that prevents ropes, nets or other ropes wrapped around the shaft from damaging the propulsion system. It works within the transmission and propulsion system, protecting critical components such as the tailshaft, horn and propeller against electrochemical wear caused by the potential difference between dissimilar metals in contact with water. If this anode is depleted without being replaced, the noble metals in the drive train are exposed to corrosion, which can lead to accelerated shaft deterioration, propeller pitting, and costly structural damage. The incorporation of the line-cutter profile adds additional preventive value, reducing the risk of serious mechanical breakdowns due to rope entanglement during navigation.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that volume their cathodic protection capacity decreases drastically. Obvious signs that the anode is exhausted are its appearance whitish, brittle or reduced to a minimal core, as well as the appearance of pitting or greenish discoloration on the shaft or propeller. The professional recommendation is to change the line-cutter anode at the beginning of each navigation season or after wintering the boat in water, without waiting for it to be completely consumed, to guarantee the protection of the submerged metal components at all times and avoid higher-cost repairs.
