Function and technical context

Hull anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the vessel's hull, propellers and other submerged metal components. This aluminum anode with dimensions 191x70 mm acts as a sacrificial electrode in the galvanic protection system, attracting corrosion to itself and preserving the structural integrity of the hull and bottom metal accessories. Aluminum as a material is particularly suitable for salt and brackish waters, offering effective protection against galvanic corrosion that can irreversibly deteriorate the metal of the hull, thru-hulls and propulsion surfaces. Without correct cathodic protection, electrolysis accelerates the wear of propellers, shafts and hull metals, with the consequent risk of serious breakdowns and costly repairs in the dock.

When to replace this part?

A hull anode should be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass through wear, as below that level it no longer offers effective cathodic protection. The clearest sign that the anode is exhausted is its eroded, irregular or almost missing appearance after visual inspection in the dock; If the hull shows pitting or corrosion in nearby areas, the anode has not been changed for too long. It is recommended to inspect and replace the hull anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual dry-out; Not waiting until they are completely consumed avoids cumulative galvanic damage that can compromise the watertightness and useful life of the hull.
