ANODE HELMET 111x51
Description
Function and technical context
Hull anodes are fundamental sacrificial elements in the cathodic protection system of any vessel. Its mission is to rust in a controlled manner to protect the noble metals of the hull—propeller, shafts, jaws and bronze or stainless steel accessories—against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt, brackish or fresh water. This 111x51 mm hull anode (ref. CMM24) is installed directly on the hull of the boat, acting as an electrochemical negative pole that absorbs the ion exchange before the structural parts do so. Without adequate cathodic protection, submerged metal components suffer accelerated degradation that can compromise the structural integrity of the hull and propulsion system.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the hull anode needs to be replaced is a mass loss of more than 50% of its volume: when the anode appears visibly eroded, cratered or reduced to less than half its size, it has exhausted its protective capacity. It is recommended to inspect and replace the hull anodes at least once a season—preventively, before launching—and at any intermediate beaching if operating in areas with high electrical conductivity or especially corrosive waters. Changing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to shafts, propellers and hull hardware.
