Description

Function and technical context

Aluminum anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the nobler metallic parts of the engine and boat, such as the shaft, propeller, engine foot or block. In a Bukh outboard or inboard motor, the anode acts as a galvanic shield: being a more electronegative metal than steel or cast iron, it attracts corrosion and is consumed before the structural parts of the propeller. The aluminum alloy of this anode (reference CMB00E0450A) is especially suitable for navigation in salt and brackish waters, where electrochemical aggressiveness is maximum and galvanic corrosion can damage critical components in a single season. Without cathodic protection that is correctly sized and in good condition, the engine is exposed to accelerated degradation that can affect gaskets, drain plugs, liners and other submerged metal surfaces.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator that an aluminum anode needs to be replaced is visible mass loss: when the anode has consumed between 50% and 75% of its volume, its protective capacity is compromised and it must be replaced before the metal of the fixing part is exposed. It is usual to inspect and renew the anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual winter stranding; In areas with high water conductivity or with boats that remain launched for many months, it is advisable to check their condition every five or six months. Replacing the CMB00E0450A anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to high-cost components in Bukh engines, the repair or replacement of which can cost several hundred euros.
