Function and technical context

Cathodic protection anodes are consumable elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the noble metal parts of the hull, shaft, propeller and other submerged components of the vessel. This Bukh anode with reference CMB00E5829 acts as a sacrificial metal in the galvanic protection system, absorbing the electrolytic corrosion that is generated when different metals coexist in contact with salt or brackish water. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can silently destroy critical parts such as the tailshaft, propeller or aluminum hull in a single sailing season. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is, therefore, a preventive maintenance measure of the first order in any boat with a Bukh engine.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that an anode needs replacement is the loss of between 50% and 60% of its mass: when the anode has been reduced by half or has an irregular, heavily eroded surface, it no longer offers sufficient protection. As a general rule of nautical maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season - coinciding with the annual beaching - and replace them preventively if they show greater wear than mentioned, even if there is still material left. Waiting for the anode to be completely consumed is equivalent to leaving the hull and transmission unprotected, which can lead to very expensive repairs; Preventive replacement with reference CMB00E5829 is by far the most economical option.
