Description

Function and technical context

This hanging aluminum anode acts as sacrificial galvanic protection on the hull or rail of the boat, interposing an active metal mass between the salt or brackish water and the submerged metal parts of greater value. Since aluminum is a metal with a more negative electrochemical potential than stainless steel, bronze or cast iron, it is aluminum that preferentially oxidizes, preserving propellers, axles, horns and hardware from galvanic corrosion. Its "hanging" format facilitates direct installation on hull surfaces by bolt, without the need to weld or remove the boat from the water in many cases. The absence or total deterioration of this component leaves the submerged metal system unprotected, which can lead to irreversible pitting in the shaft or loss of material in the propeller and horn, with the consequent cost of repair.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has completed its cycle is the reduction of its mass to 50% or more compared to the initial size; At that point the cathodic protection capacity drops dramatically and must be replaced without delay. For boats in regular use, the professional recommendation is to inspect the anodes at each seasonal beaching and replace them preventively at the beginning of each nautical campaign, regardless of their apparent condition. Not waiting for the anode to be completely consumed avoids costly repairs to shafts and propellers, the machining or replacement of which far exceeds the cost of a new anode.
