Description

Function and technical context

Zinc anodes are cathodic protection elements whose mission is to sacrifice themselves electrochemically to protect the submerged metal parts of the boat - propellers, shafts, engine tails and metal hulls - against galvanic corrosion. This kit groups together in a single supply all the anodes necessary for complete protection of the propulsion unit assembly, simplifying both ordering and grounded maintenance. Galvanic corrosion is especially aggressive in salt and brackish waters, where the difference in electrical potential between dissimilar metals in contact with the marine electrolyte can destroy expensive components in a few weeks if the anodes are not in good condition. Acting as an active sacrificial metal, zinc deflects corrosive attack towards itself, preserving the structural and functional integrity of shafts, propellers and propeller casings.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that zinc anodes have exhausted their useful life is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed more than 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. The usual maintenance pattern for zinc anodes is inspection at each annual or seasonal grounding, with systematic replacement even if the wear appears moderate, since the cost of the anodes is minimal compared to repairing a corroded propeller or shaft. Preventatively replacing the entire kit each season is the practice recommended by marine maintenance technicians to ensure continuous cathodic protection and avoid costly breakdowns away from port.
