Function and technical context

Zinc anodes are the central element of the cathodic protection system in boats, acting as a sacrificial metal to protect the metal parts of the hull, propeller, shaft and engine in or out of the water. This 45 x 10mm replacement zinc is mounted at strategic points in the drivetrain or hull, where it corrodes in a controlled manner before more expensive structural components do. Without a healthy anode, galvanic corrosion silently attacks the aluminum and brass of engine and transmission parts, causing irreversible damage that can render your boat unusable. Its correct installation and periodic replacement are the most economical and effective way to extend the useful life of the drive assembly.

When to replace this part?

The wear of a zinc anode is detected visually: when the anode has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass, it must be replaced without delay, regardless of the time elapsed. As a general rule of preventive maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season—before launching and at each grounding—and replace them systematically at the beginning of each season if they work in waters with high electrolyte activity or in port areas with high eddy currents. Delaying the change of a worn zinc is equivalent to leaving the metal components of the boat unprotected: a breakdown due to corrosion in the shaft or propeller on the high seas involves repair costs much higher than that of this replacement.
