MOTOR ANODE 51 x 16 mm.
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes for engines are essential cathodic protection elements in any powertrain installed in a marine environment. Their mission is to concentrate the galvanic corrosion process on themselves, protecting the metal surfaces of the engine - crankcase, aluminum bodies, exhaust manifolds and transmission parts - against the electrochemical attack caused by salt or brackish water. This 51 x 16 mm anode with reference CME2BSP is designed to be mounted directly on the engine block or external components, acting as the preferred negative pole in the galvanic pair. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, corrosion advances on the structural parts of the engine, causing irreversible damage to high-cost components such as water caps, casings or axles.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, the cathodic protection begins to be insufficient and must be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. The inspection and replacement of the motor anodes must be carried out at least once a season, coinciding with the annual tune-up of the boat, although in areas with high conductivity water or boats in intensive navigation it may be necessary to review them every 6 months. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs due to galvanic corrosion in the engine.
