Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as cathodic protection in Lombardini engines installed on boats, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking the structural metal parts of the engine and hull. It works within the salt or brackish water cooling system, where the difference in electrical potential between different metals in contact with seawater triggers highly aggressive corrosive processes. Its correct condition is essential to preserve the integrity of the engine block, heat exchangers, collectors and other metal parts that would otherwise suffer accelerated and irreversible oxidation. Without active and well-maintained galvanic protection, the engine's aluminum and steel components are completely exposed to marine corrosion, which can lead to serious breakdowns and costly out-of-port repairs.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom of a depleted anode is the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on the metal surfaces of the engine or nearby accessories, a sign that the anode has stopped performing its protective function. It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replace it when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, without waiting for it to disappear completely. Renewing the anode preventively during each annual maintenance is the practice most recommended by naval mechanics to avoid structural damage to the engine which, if it occurs, would multiply the cost of the repair.
