CATERPILLAR ANODE 6L2283 1/4
Read the review
Description
Function and technical context
This zinc anode for Caterpillar engines acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, absorbing galvanic corrosion that occurs when engine or boat metals come into contact with salt or brackish water. It works within the seawater cooling system and on external metal surfaces exposed to the marine environment, protecting structural components and higher value parts such as heat exchangers, cylinder liners and metal casings. Without proper anodic protection, electrochemical corrosion directly attacks the engine's base metals, causing pitting, gouging, and premature failure in critical components that are difficult and expensive to replace.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious symptom that an anode has reached its end of life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost between 50% and 75% of its initial size, it must be replaced immediately before it stops offering effective protection. For Caterpillar marine engines operating in saline or high eddy current environments, it is recommended that the anodes be inspected at least once per season and, as a general rule, replaced each boating season regardless of their apparent condition. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to high-cost components and guarantee the reliability of the engine in navigation.
